Do you feel completely drained during your period? Maybe you're dealing with dark brown blood at the beginning or end of your cycle, passing large clots, or getting hit with cramps that make you double over in pain. Your doctor has likely told you these symptoms are just a normal part of menstruation—they may have even prescribed birth control to "regulate" your cycle.

I see women in my practice every day who've accepted these symptoms as “just part of being a woman”. They schedule their lives around their periods, cancel plans when the pain becomes unbearable, and wonder if they'll ever feel normal again. Many worry about how these issues might affect their fertility.

What most women don't realize is that the position of your uterus plays a direct role in your hormonal health. The color of your menstrual blood and presence of clots actually tell an important story about your uterine position and overall hormonal balance.

How Uterine Position Impacts Hormone Balance: The Overlooked Connection in Women’s Health

When your uterus sits in her optimal position, she will get optimal blood, lymph and nerve flow, and your hormones will be balanced throughout the month. When your uterus is in her best position, the lining of your uterus builds equally throughout the month and blood is able to flow properly during menstruation, leading to pain-free cycles.

When your uterus is not in her optimal position, her blood, lymph and nerve flow is decreased, leading to hormonal dysregulation. Periods can become painful or irregular. Menstrual blood might be brown or have clots, and fertility can also be negatively impacted. Digestion can become slower and bloating can set in.

The good news is, there is a simple protocol to bring your uterus back into her optimal position. And after reading this article, you might realize several symptoms you are experiencing can be easily resolved with optimizing the position of your uterus!

The Surprising Link Between Uterine Position and Hormone Regulation

It makes sense that the health of your uterus impacts your hormones. What most women don't realize is that the health of your uterus is impacted by her position!

The position of your uterus is one of the top factors determining her circulation. The amount of circulation an organ receives will highly influence its function. When your uterus is low and compressed, her circulation is decreased, and her function declines as well. When your uterus is in her best lifted and centered position in your pelvis, her circulation will be optimal and her function improved.

Circulation includes blood, lymph and nerve flow. Hormones are carried by the blood, secreted at neuronal synapses, and work with the lymph. Wherever blood, lymph and nerve flow is concerned, hormonal regulation is also impacted.

So when your uterine position is optimized, hormonal balance will be improved. When your uterus is tilted or not in her best position, hormonal balance will decline.

Here are signs of Hormonal Imbalance stemming from Uterine Position:

Period Pain:

Painful periods stem from a uterus that is low and compressed. Your uterus is a muscle. During the bleeding phase of your cycle, she contracts to shed her lining. When she is low and compressed, she does not have the room to move and flow and contract, and this feels painful.

Optimize Uterine Position = Pain-Free Periods.

Cycle Regularity:

The regularity of your cycle is directly influenced by her circulation. When circulation is compromised, either because of lifestyle, energy expenditure, or organ position- menstrual regularity is impacted.

Improve Uterus Position = Regulate Cycle

Bloating:

Bloating is directly related to circulation. Bloating is a result of decreased venous circulation from the core, including the abdominal and pelvic organs. The position and range of motion of your organs has a direct impact on their circulation, and how much blood is able to be carried away from the organs.

Improve organ position = Improve circulation = Goodbye Bloating

Characteristics of Menstrual Blood:

Your uterus needs optimal blood flow to shed its lining more easily during your period. When your uterus shifts from its natural position, it actually changes how blood moves through the organ, leading to two common hormonal issues I see in my practice:

1. Brown Blood

That dark brown blood at the beginning or end of your period is actually older blood that's been sitting in your uterus too long. When blood stays stagnant because your uterus isn't positioned correctly, it oxidizes, leading to brown rather than bright red blood during your period.

2. Blood Clots

Large blood clots signal that your uterine lining didn't build up evenly. When your uterus sits in an abnormal, tilted position, some areas receive more blood flow than others, creating an uneven lining that sheds in chunks rather than smoothly. These clots often cause cramping as your body works harder to pass them.

Signs of a Tilted Uterus

A properly positioned uterus is lifted and centered in your pelvis. She should be one fists length below your belly button. Pregnancy, childbirth, posture, breathing patterns, spinal alignment, or physical strain can cause it to shift backward, forward, or to either side.

Most women notice the effects of a tilted uterus during their periods - severe cramping that keeps you in bed, or periods that seem to last forever with heavy bleeding and large clots. With a tilted uterus, sex often becomes uncomfortable, with pain during intercourse- certain positions may be more painful than others, there is often difficulty getting aroused, or trouble reaching orgasm.

That stubborn low belly pooch that won't go away no matter how much you exercise? It's likely connected to your uterine position, along with that constant feeling of pressure in your pelvis and low back pain that worsens throughout the day. You might find yourself running to the bathroom frequently or struggling with constipation. And if you're trying to conceive, a tilted uterus can contribute to fertility challenges and endometriosis symptoms.

Does Hormonal Birth Control Help?

Taking birth control has become the standard response when women mention period pain or hormonal symptoms to their doctors. Many women started the pill as teenagers for heavy periods, acne, or irregular cycles and stayed on it for years or even decades.

Birth control medications work by introducing synthetic hormones into your body. These artificial hormones prevent your body from producing its own natural hormones, essentially putting your normal hormone production system on pause. When you're on birth control, you're not having real periods - those monthly bleeds are actually withdrawal bleeding from the medication.

The dark blood, painful clots, and intense cramping often return as soon as you stop taking it. Unfortunately, women's response to birth control is varied, and often their symptoms come back even stronger when they decided to get pregnant or simply wanted to experience their natural cycles again.

But it doesn’t need to be this way.

Restoring Your Natural Hormone Balance

The Core Recovery Method® is an online program that teaches you everything you need to know to lift and center your uterus, helping to balance your hormones and regulate your cycles. The Core Recovery Method® protocol optimizes uterine position through specific breath work and postural techniques that work through the subconscious nervous system, maximizing their effectiveness. These gentle yet powerful practices help guide your uterus back to her optimal position, where she can receive optimal circulation and function as intended.

When your uterus sits properly, blood flows freely, carrying fresh oxygen and nutrients while removing old tissue efficiently and without pain. This improved circulation means no more brown blood or painful clots during your period. Your lymphatic system works better too, helping to balance your hormones naturally.

The right uterine position also ensures proper nerve function to your reproductive organs, regulating your monthly cycle, supporting healthy sexual function, and improving fertility.

If you’re currently using hormonal birth control and scared about the potential pain of transitioning off of it, The Core Recovery Method® can help you too! When you reposition your uterus, it addresses the root cause of your painful period symptoms, allowing for a smooth, pain-free return to regular cycles if and when you decide to make that change.

I designed the Core Recovery Method® to fit into your busy life - in just 30 minutes a day, you can reposition your uterus and resolve the root cause of your hormonal imbalance!
